Silocone Hydrogel preferred by thousands
Manufacturer sales of silicone hydrogel lenses increased 18.1 percent during 2008, as sales of other lenses declined 4.7 percent. For all of 2008, silicone hydrogel lenses accounted for 47.5 percent of units sold and 49 percent of ABB OPTICAL GROUP soft lens dollar sales, up from 41.8 percent and 44.2 percent respectively in 2007.
Disposable contact lenses continue to gain in popularity
Usage of monthly and daily disposable contact lenses continues to increase year over year. Monthly lenses grew from 28.6 percent of dollar sales in 2007 to 30.5 percent in 2008. Daily disposables increased from 11.8 percent to 12.9 percent in the soft lens category
Specialty lenses outpace market
Specialty lens growth continued to outpace the overall market in 2008. The soft torics lens share of dollar sales grew from 19 percent in 2007 to 20.4 percent in 2008, while multifocals increased from 5.5 percent to 6.3 percent of the category.
